What Is Tempered Glass?

Updated: Nov 13, 2020

What is Tempered Glass?

Tempered Glass, sometimes referred to as Safety Glass, is glass that has undergone the tempering process becoming both safer and stronger.

The tempering process is a special heating and cooling method that takes place during the manufacturing of glass that increases its surface strength by 4-5 compared to non-tempered glass.

Additionally, the tempering process changes the way standard (Annealed) glass breaks from long razor-sharp pieces, into small pebble-like pieces that are safe to handle and much less likely to cause serious injury.

On many projects the cost to switch from annealed to tempered is negligible, so if you are concerned about safety or building codes tempered glass is recommended and will always meet your buildings requirements.
